gprs smoke alarm

Requirement

Housing management companies must regularly check the condition of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed on their premises. Our customer wanted to provide a solution to this problem by creating an alarm that could use the mobile phone network to automatically report their status.

Development

PTL Associates designed and developed a smoke and CO alarm with GPRS capability. Careful power management enables the battery operated device to last 5 years. As well as sending SMS messages to designated mobile phones, PTL provided a server application that could communicate with the device over GPRS.

Results

The high level of innovation in the device led to our client being selected as a finalist in the Institute of Engineering and Technology Innovation Awards under the Built Environment category. Our customer is now taking the alarm into volume manufacture.
